Nathan Haugen grew up in the rolling hills of Rollag, MN, on his parents' 80 acre farmstead. He has come to know their land and animals and developed a passion for culture somewhere along the way. He graduated from Hawley High School in 2006 and enrolled at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. In May 2010, he received his B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota Duluth while focusing on cultural anthropology and Latin America.
In August 2010, he left behind his job as a Youth Worker with Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota and embarked on a journey to meet and live with Brazilian friends met years ago using the international calling program Skype. September 2010 finds him alive and well in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil, with even more dreams. He will spend three months making an effort to learn Portuguese and spend as much time as possible with some amazing people.
When he dies, he wants to be buried on top of a hill that is home. He doesn't want a casket, but if county officials insist, he can compromise with a heavy plastic bag. A tarp will do if they become hard-nosed.
